The Rise of Poker Robots in Online Poker

Internet poker has become all the more difficult with the advent of poker robots. These programs
though not entirely fool-proof
are becoming more accurate by applying systems like Bayes theorem
Monte Carlo simulation
or even artificial neural networks. Although they can be used in a legitimate game of ‘human versus computer’ poker
many people use poker robots to cheat; in fact
most producers of these programs tout the fact that you can make a lot of money while knowing absolutely nothing about the game. But does the rise of poker robots necessarily mean the downfall of all legitimate online poker
or will they help to create a more challenging atmosphere?
For many years there was an underground whisper of a coming siege of a poker robot plague. But in 2004 players – whether they had heard the gossip or not – started noticing the effects of these programs. It became a matter of course to avoid certain players
not because of a talent for the game
but because they were suspected of some very serious cheating. Many human players even stopped with online poker altogether
while the masters of these bots continued to quietly download
and even build more and more advanced programs.
Today
many people feel that the rise of poker robots is creating a gap in the online gaming industry. Despite their weaknesses (the most important being human unpredictability)
many believe that the sheer mathematical advances in poker robots make them virtually unbeatable. Most online gaming sites feel that this gives the controller of these programs an undue advantage
and are taking steps to prevent this unfair practice. Some of the better known websites have installed bot identification software
which will get rid of the robot controllers within a short period of time. Those that are found to be operating poker robots are invariably banned for life from these websites. Despite these measures
many fear that the advances will go so far out of control that the whole industry will collapse. One fear is the arrival of a poker robot that can scan human player’s cards
and react in real-time.
However
some contend that poker bots carry only a minimal threat
and can actually function as a prompt for human players to improve their gaming ability. These people feel that with all of the complexities of poker
it would be impossible for a machine to grasp every last possible play
and in reality
can be no match for human intelligence. Another opposing theory is that given the vast amount of time it has taken programmers to come up with most of the comparatively weak poker robots available
it would take decades to invent something that can beat a table of human players 100% of the time.
This may or may not be the case; however
it is certain that despite the bans that are being set in place by many gaming websites
programmers are working on making poker robots stronger and smarter. Side stepping the bans are one task that is currently getting a tune up. Many have also been working on a program that not only plays the game
but mimics its fellow players to improve its strategy. It is certain
though
that the creators of poker robots will have to keep on top of updates to avoid disappearing altogether.
Whether we like it or not
the rise of poker robots has arrived
and shows no sign of fading any time soon; our only options are to fight them with bans
or building our own programs to work against them
or try to incorporate them into our own gaming experience.
